How can I help?
Many of us have asked this question upon seeing news coverage of flooding, hurricanes, tornados, earthquakes, fires… It’s the natural response of human empathy. “If that were me, I’d be praying for help.”
Have Heart – Will Travel is an extension of this human response. We know that you want to help and that you feel most helpful when you are at the scene and working side by side with the victims to rebuild their lives.
We also know that the expense of travel to and from the site may be a personal hardship. Having participated in such trips, we know that the actual time spent at the disaster site may be only a fraction of the total time spent organizing, fundraising, coordinating, and driving.
We have been shown that mercy for the merciful may be the difference between showing up or watching from your living room.
The mission of Have Heart – Will Travel
We want to:
- help you connect with a relief agency at the disaster site
- help you connect with organizations willing to provide hospitality en route
- help with travel costs (fuel, meals…)
- remove or reduce obstacles that may keep you from showing up
What we will do
Have Heart – Will Travel is about you, the volunteer. All of us have been in your shoes. We know the needs of the first-time volunteer and the veteran.
We provide links to the web sites of relief agencies. We answer questions and facilitate introductions. We make available checklists and forms for download. We will, to the limit of our funds, reimburse incurred travel expenses up to $100 per volunteer per trip. We will do whatever we can to reduce the burden on you. We feel that you need to focus on the disaster victims—not feel like a victim yourself.
